Type 2Planétarium

Astronomical timekeeping with rotating Earth model and lunar complications

Planétarium Front View

Astronomical Experience

The Planétarium turns timekeeping into an astronomical experience with a hand-built suspended Earth model that rotates with the natural 24-hour cycle, letting you see in real-time which hemisphere is in daylight. Compare with our Tri-Date model or view more concept explorations.

Complex gear trains drive the Earth model, moon phase, and seasonal tilt mechanisms with precision timing, creating a precise timepiece that combines clockmaking with astronomy.

Prototyping

From CAD design to component fabrication, electronics integration, and final assembly - ensuring everything fits together well while keeping a clean, simple appearance.

Design Evolution

The Planétarium concept evolved from early astronomical clock studies, incorporating both educational value and precise timekeeping functionality.

Planétarium Design Concept

Earth Model

Suspended sphere with accurate continental positioning and 24-hour rotation cycle, positioned on an accurate 23.5-degree axial tilt that slowly rotates through the seasons, providing a year-long display of how solar illumination shifts across our planet's surface.

Moon Phase Complication

Precisely scaled lunar complication positioned front and center, creating a harmonious astronomical tableau that shows current moon phase with astronomical accuracy, complementing the Earth model's seasonal display.

Precision Timekeeping

Practical timekeeping functions are maintained through a dedicated time display featuring the main hours and minutes dial on the left side paired with a centered small sub-dial for running seconds.

Date Display

Weekday and date number are shown in an aperture window positioned above the Earth model, built into the design while maintaining practical functionality.

Educational Value

Provides real-time visualization of Earth's day/night cycle and seasonal changes, effectively serving as both an educational tool and an elegant month indicator as the seasons progress throughout the year.

Premium Construction

Premium walnut wood case with metal accents, WiFi-enabled perpetual calendar synchronization, and interactive digital crown for exploring complications, all hand-assembled in my USA garage workshop.
